HEIDI

I’m still breathless as Knox pulls his shirt up over his head and starts to clean me up. I can’t believe we just did what we did. God, that was hot. My whole body is still buzzing from it.

Knox cleans the last of his cum off my belly, then looks up into my eyes. “Did I get any on your face?”

I can’t help but giggle. “No.”

“Too bad.” He balls up his shirt and tosses it out of the way. “Maybe next time.”

Without his shirt, he looks even bigger and broader. All I want to do is cuddle up against that sturdy, strong chest of his and fall asleep in his protective arms.

“You aren’t really going to sleep on the couch, are you?” I ask him. “There’s plenty of room for both of us in the bed.”

Knox doesn’t say anything. He just stares up at the ceiling with one of those incredibly intense expressions of his.

“Hey,” I say, nudging him with my knee. “Don’t worry about my dad. He doesn’t have to know.”

Knox gives me a baffled look. “You think I could keep something like this from him? He’s going to know the second I walk into his office.”

“How?”

“Trust me. It’ll be written all over my face.” He shakes his head. “Ah, fuck it. If he fires me, he fires me.”

I frown at him. “What? Knox, I don’t want to get you fired.”

“There are other jobs. I’ll be fine.”

“Well, it’s not fine with me.”

He looks at me for a long moment, then reaches out and strokes my cheek with his thumb. “You’re so sweet, you know that? I don’t deserve attention from a woman like you.”

“Don’t say that.”

“No, it’s true,” he says. “Heidi, I’ve done a lot of fucked up things in this life. Things that are wrong, no matter how you look at it. I should be in prison, not in bed with a beautiful woman.”

A little shiver runs through me. “But you were ordered to do those things, right? It wasn’t of your own volition.”

“That doesn’t make it right.”

“No, I know that. My point is that you wouldn’t have done any of it on your own. Right?”

He continues to stroke my cheek. “Honey, you aren’t going to convince me that I’m a decent man.”

Emotion knots in my throat. Maybe I have rose-colored glasses on right now, but I want to believe that despite the darkness in him, he’s a worthy and redeemable man.

“Have you ever hurt someone who was innocent?” I ask.

“No. Not to my knowledge.”

“What if my dad asked you to? Would you?”

“No.”

“Okay,” I say. “That’s all I need to know.
